This summer staple is bursting with flavor. In celebration of National Watermelon Day, we’re going to let you in on a little secret on how to enhance watermelon’s natural sweetness with salty-sour-herbaceous goodness.
To bring out the sugars in the red flesh, sprinkle your wedges with equal parts kosher salt, freshly grated lime zest and minced fresh mint leaves. The salt actually makes the fruit sweeter, if you can imagine that. The lime adds a floral tartness and the mint brings light refreshment and balance. A tablespoon each of this trio should be enough to season a whole watermelon, but double that or triple it if you’re cutting up a few melons.
To make: rub the salt, lime zest and mint together in a bowl with your fingers until very well mixed. When ready to serve, arrange the watermelon on a platter and sprinkle with the salt mixture.
